I have been watching this one Pastor on Sunday’s and I have been having some really wonderful moments with God throughout my worship time with this church. So, this past Sunday I am listening and the Pastor says “some of you have never been given the Holy Spirit, you have never spoken tongues”. Oh man, here we go again…
So, since I started my relationship with God and received His Spirit, I have been drawn to the charismatic side of God. I have experienced the gifts of Prophecy, healing, and teaching but not tongues. But I know I was given the Spirit because God discipled me when I was saved and showed me that I received it.
However, this was the third time I was told that I wasn’t saved because I didn’t speak tongues. That is total bull, a complete lie.
So I looked it up in Scripture. I found that in 1 Corinthians (Chapters 12-14), it basically says that the gift of tongues is given by the Spirit and that it is discouraged while at church but if done at church it should be no more than 3 people, one at a time, and there should be an interpreter. If there is no interpreter then “KEEP SILENT”.
It specifically says in Corinthians 12:7-11 that the Spirit gives each person their own gift, meaning you can’t choose nor can you practice it, it will just happen if it is given to you. You can desire but you can’t choose, you get what you get. He gives us all different gifts so we can operate together, each part has their own job, we complete each other. He distributes to each one as he determines. It does not say anywhere that we will ALL get the gift of tongues.
Verse 23 says, So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and inquirers or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? I’m even a believer and find myself very uncomfortable when the whole church starts speaking in tongues because I don’t know what anyone is saying and can’t come into agreement with it. I can’t fully imagine what it feels like for an unbeliever but I have a good idea…
I have a friend and she was seeking God with her boyfriend and they went to a church that was operating this way and let’s just say that they left really early. Such a shame. There was an opportunity to show God and His love to those seeking Him, but because they were operating like the Corinthian church, they lost the opportunity to pour into unbelievers lives.
I see all of these chapters as a type of scolding for operating chaotically. Chapter 14 verse 40 says, But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.
Now I know many people point to Acts 2, the day the Spirit was poured out and they started to speak in tongues. It is great that this happened at this time but it was still enabled by the Spirit (verse 4). It was needed that day because each person was able to hear the word in their own language (verse 6), it was given by the Spirit for a purpose.
Acts 2:38 says, Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, ever one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This my friends, is how you are saved. Proof that you are saved is your willingness to try and turn from things that are against God, repenting. And repenting was exactly what I started doing the moment my soul collided with God’s Spirit…
