Does your lamp have oil?

The Parable of the Ten Virgins

Matt 25  “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise.

Jesus speaks in Parables so that the people who have Him in their hearts can understand what they need to do to remain with Him and receive the kingdom of Heaven. It is to separate the wise and the foolish. In Matt 13 the disciples ask Jesus why He speaks in Parables and he told them ” The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. Basically those whose hearts are truly with God will receive Wisdom that will change their lives, Wisdom even the most educated man does not have.

I remember when I would try to read the Bible and put it down after a short time because it was so boring to me, it didn’t make any sense. I also remember when I started seeing it so clearly, it became alive and I was so excited. Now it has all the answers to all my questions. Someone once said to me “I wish there was a manual for raising children”, I thought “there is, it’s the Bible”.

There were these Virgins and they were waiting for the bridegroom (Jesus) to come back. They all had lamps (said they believed in Jesus as the son of God), but only 5 of them had oil (an actual relationship with Jesus).

The foolish ones didn’t keep refilling their lamp with oil by believing Jesus was the Lord of their lives and letting Him lead them. They didn’t turn from their sin and let God change them. Then when the time came for Him to come they panicked and wanted someone to give them a relationship with Him. When they were shut out of Heaven they knocked asking to be let in, Jesus said He didn’t know them. He also said He never knew the people in Matt 7:23 who actually used his name to do things in life, but they still had no relationship with Him.

I consider myself so lucky to have met Jesus and start this relationship with Him. I try not to think about the day He comes back and how many people I know will not be allowed into Heaven.

Don’t let your oil run out. The Bible says works will not get you there, being a good person will not get you there, this goes for us believers also. I think our walks can become so much a part of us that we take it for granted and get caught up in the motions of it and lose the heart. If we lose the heart of it, we are losing our relationship. God looks at our hearts, not our works.

Dear God I pray that the ones who don’t have a relationship with you seek you and find you, I pray that all of us who are already believers keep our hearts in it, not letting this world detour us from the narrow path. Give us strength and remind us everyday of the first days when we craved to know you, and would do anything you wanted us to do even if it made us uncomfortable, because we truly believed you knew best.
